When a project of upgrading a suburban street gas main connection started being put into place, the contractors were required to draw up a safe system of work. The maintenance that was planned involved excavating across the front of each property, in order to access the gas line connectors and to permit engineers to connect the new lines.
The contractors were well aware that the excavations would take several days to complete and that on-site health and safety was a top priority due to the large number of residents living on the street.
The no-dig safety solution
Providing Vacuum Excavation support was the top solution to ensure that site safety was dealt with accordingly and to also prevent any potential hazards. The self-contained suction units allowed each connector to be excavated without the need to create large piles of ground spoil along the residential street.
Once all utility connected were efficiently located and marked outside each individual house, the precision control of the Vacuum Excavator ensured that minimum excavation was required. This meant that the workers kept their area as small as possible which reduced the risk of any potential on-site incidents.
Preventative Planning
With safety being the number one concern of all planning stages, contractors were also well aware that the Vacuum Excavator’s no-dig approach would provide a lower risk excavation method. Using the strong suction boom and on-board air lance to unearth underground lines, the need to manually dig ensured that no lines were damaged and that no injuries occurred.
Due to the Vacuum Excavator’s no-dig technology ensured that the contractors completed the extensive gas upgrade work throughout the street in an efficient and timely manner.
Vacuum Excavation offers a faster, more cost-effective solution than manual hand digging. A standard Vacuum Excavation can remove 2m3of spoil per hour, while an inbuilt skip can hold up to 10m3 before it needs to be emptied. In short, one Vacuum Excavation vehicle will complete a job in the fraction of time in which it would take a team of labourers or a digger.
Another beneficial aspect of Vacuum Excavation is that it is a significant time saver.
